Harry Brook's 114-Ball Double Century, Sri Lanka's 429-Run Chase: Rawalpindi Witnesses ODI Record Frenzy
The England–Sri Lanka ODI in Rawalpindi turned into one of the most extraordinary run-fests in the history of the format. Harry Brook smashed a double century from just 114 balls, while Sri Lanka chased down a target of 430 to complete the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
England posted 429/4 after a sensational batting display. It was the first 400-plus ODI total recorded by a team in Pakistan. Sri Lanka then produced an extraordinary chase to reach 430 and rewrite the record books.
Only South Africa have successfully chased a bigger target in ODI cricket. They chased 435 against Australia in 2006.
Harry Brook's Record-Breaking Double Century
Harry Brook produced a historic innings, scoring 202 runs and reaching his double century in just 114 deliveries. His effort is now the fastest double century in ODI history.
Brook also became the first English batter to score a double century in men's ODI cricket. Before him, England's highest individual ODI score was Ben Stokes' 182 against New Zealand in 2023.
His 202 became even more remarkable because England eventually lost the match. Brook is the first batter in ODI history to score a double century for a losing side.
Previously, the highest individual score by a batter on the losing side was Charles Coventry's unbeaten 194 for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in 2009.
Brook also broke the record for the highest ODI score by a batter in Pakistan. The previous record was Gary Kirsten's unbeaten 188 against the United Arab Emirates during the 1996 World Cup.
Kirsten, now Sri Lanka's coach, was present in Rawalpindi as Brook surpassed his long-standing record.
Brook's 202 also became the highest ODI score by a non-opener, surpassing Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup.
Sri Lanka's Historic Chase
Sri Lanka were 169/2 after 25 overs and still needed 261 runs from the remaining 25 overs. Despite that enormous requirement, they went on to complete the chase—something no team had previously achieved in ODI cricket from such a position.
The previous record belonged to Ireland, who needed 215 runs from the final 25 overs against England during the 2011 World Cup.
Sri Lanka's victory also ranks second among successful 400-plus chases in List A cricket. Remarkably, four of the last five successful chases of 400 or more have come since December 2025.
A Match Packed With Records
The two teams combined for 859 runs, the second-highest aggregate in an ODI match. The record remains 872 runs, scored during the South Africa–Australia match in Johannesburg in 2006.
Eight batters from the two sides scored at least half-centuries, equalling the record for the most 50-plus scores in a single ODI match.
The match also produced a new record for boundaries. England and Sri Lanka combined for 93 fours, surpassing the previous record of 87 fours scored by Australia and South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006.
England hit 48 fours, while Sri Lanka struck 45.
Brook scored 174 of his runs from just 90 balls against pace. In ODI matches where ball-by-ball data is available, that is the highest score against pace by any batter. Rohit Sharma previously held the record with 166 runs against pace during his 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.
England's Sam Curran also endured a record-breaking outing, conceding 103 runs. That is the most runs conceded by an England bowler in a men's ODI. Curran previously held the record after conceding 98 against West Indies in 2023.
From Brook's breathtaking double century to Sri Lanka's remarkable 430-run chase, the Rawalpindi ODI delivered an extraordinary collection of records and will be remembered as one of the most remarkable run-filled matches in ODI history.
