Cristian Romero enjoyed a memorable night in Cordoba as Argentina’s new captain. Leading the national team at home for the first time, the Atletico Madrid centre-back also marked the occasion with a goal in a commanding 4-0 victory over Bolivia.

Argentina cruised past Bolivia at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium on Thursday, with Romero scoring the team’s third goal. He rose to meet a superb free-kick from Nico Paz and powered a header into the far corner.

Romero’s family were in the stands to witness the special occasion. Before the match, his mother Rosa spoke about her pride at seeing her son take on the responsibility of leading Argentina into a new era.

“It is a great source of pride and happiness. I am very happy for him and for everyone in Argentina as the national team begins a new journey. His hard work, sacrifice, natural ability and mental strength have brought him to where he is today.”

Romero’s uncle even made a prediction before the match that proved partly correct. He predicted that Romero would score with a header and that Argentina would win 2-1. The final score was different, but Romero did indeed find the net with his head.

After the match, Romero spoke emotionally about the significance of the occasion. Ten years earlier, he had made his debut for Cordoba-based club Belgrano at the same stadium. He returned a decade later as Argentina captain.

“It is a special day. Ten years ago I made my debut here with Belgrano, and today I returned as captain. Being part of the greatest era of our national team is incredible. I never imagined this. It is a huge responsibility, but I feel ready.”

Following the departures of Lionel Messi and Nicolas Otamendi from international football after the World Cup, coach Lionel Scaloni selected Romero as Argentina’s new captain. He is now the third player to lead the team on a permanent basis, with Emiliano Martinez and Lautaro Martinez next in the leadership group.

Scaloni has also made clear how highly he values Romero. The Argentina coach described him as one of the best centre-backs in the world while highlighting areas where the defender can still improve.

“He is one of the best centre-backs in the world. Physically, he was not at the level we wanted at the World Cup, but we always want him on the pitch. Sometimes he gets tired, and that is something he needs to improve.”

Romero also acknowledged the lasting impact of Messi as Argentina begin a new chapter without their long-time captain.

“We will miss Leo, our captain. There will never be another like him. He has left a great legacy for us. We have to keep moving forward and bring Argentina back to the top.”
