Portugal President Rushes to Denmark to Resolve Ronaldo-Jorge Jesus Tension
Portugal have been hit by growing internal tension ahead of a crucial UEFA Nations League fixture, with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença travelling to Denmark for an urgent meeting involving Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus.
Proença reportedly cancelled a previously scheduled trip and travelled to Scandinavia in an attempt to ease the situation between the Portugal captain and the newly appointed coach.
The tension emerged after Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo, when Ronaldo spent the entire 90 minutes on the bench. The 41-year-old forward immediately left the pitch and headed straight to the dressing room after the final whistle.
Jesus later addressed the issue of Ronaldo's playing time and the balance between experienced stars and younger players. The Portugal coach indicated that Ronaldo could not be expected to play every three days in the same way as a 20-year-old such as Joao Neves.
His comments reportedly added to the tension. Ronaldo subsequently trained separately rather than with the main squad, while differences over playing time and the coach's tactical plans became a central part of the discussion.
Ronaldo, however, has made it clear that he has no immediate intention of walking away from international football.
“The day I feel that I have nothing more to contribute to the team, that is the day I will say goodbye,” Ronaldo said.
He has also indicated that he has spoken with both Proença and Jesus and still believes he can help Portugal achieve its objectives.
The current dispute therefore appears to centre on Ronaldo's role, playing time and the coach's tactical plans rather than an immediate retirement decision.
With an important Nations League match approaching, Proença's intervention is aimed at restoring calm within the squad. The key question now is how Ronaldo will be used under Jesus and what role the Portugal captain will have in the team's plans going forward.
