From Sexual Remarks to Nepotism: 8 Major ‘Koffee With Karan’ Controversies

Celebrity relationships, personal lives, breakups and unfiltered opinions have always been central to Koffee With Karan. Over the years, Karan Johar’s popular talk show has produced several memorable moments—but some conversations have also sparked major controversies.

From comments about former partners to heated exchanges over nepotism and inappropriate remarks, several episodes have remained part of Bollywood’s pop-culture conversation for years.

Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor Take Shots at Ranbir Kapoor

One of the most memorable controversies came during the third season, when Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor appeared together. Much of the conversation revolved around Deepika’s former boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor.

Sonam suggested that Ranbir needed a stylist and hinted that while he might be a good friend, he was not necessarily a good boyfriend. Deepika’s past relationship with Ranbir also became part of the discussion.

The public discussion of Ranbir’s personal life generated considerable controversy, with reports suggesting that members of his family were unhappy with the comments. Karan Johar later acknowledged that some remarks about Ranbir had gone too far.

Kangana Ranaut Calls Karan Johar the ‘Flagbearer of Nepotism’

In 2017, Kangana Ranaut appeared on the show with Saif Ali Khan while promoting Rangoon. During the episode, she directly called Karan Johar the “flagbearer of nepotism.”

Kangana argued that star children received preferential opportunities in Bollywood while outsiders often faced a different environment. Karan later criticised her comments, and their disagreement over nepotism became increasingly public.

The issue resurfaced later that year when Karan, Saif and Varun Dhawan joked about nepotism at an awards ceremony, triggering another backlash. Karan later apologised for the episode.

Deepika’s Condom Advertisement Remark About Ranbir

Another memorable moment from the same season involved Ranbir Kapoor. During the rapid-fire round, Karan asked Deepika which product Ranbir would be best suited to advertise.

Her answer was a condom.

Because the comment came after Deepika and Ranbir’s breakup, many viewers interpreted it as a dig at her former boyfriend. The remark reportedly upset Ranbir’s parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. Deepika later explained that she had made the comment as a joke.

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul Sparked a Cricket Controversy

One of the show's most serious controversies came in 2019 when cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul appeared on the programme.

Their comments about women and relationships triggered widespread criticism, particularly Pandya’s remarks, which were widely described as inappropriate and sexist. One part of his comments was also criticised as racist.

The controversy went beyond social media. The Committee of Administrators of the BCCI suspended both players and sent them back from the tour. The episode was subsequently removed from the digital platform, and both players were later fined.

Emraan Hashmi Calls Aishwarya Rai ‘Plastic’

During a rapid-fire round in 2014, Emraan Hashmi was asked about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and answered with a single word: “plastic.”

The comment about Aishwarya’s appearance was widely viewed as insulting. Years later, Aishwarya said that being called “fake” and “plastic” was among the worst things ever said about her.

Emraan later expressed regret over the remark, saying he had made the comment impulsively in the moment.

Alia Bhatt’s Wrong Answer About India’s President

In 2013, Alia Bhatt appeared on the show with her Student of the Year co-stars Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra.

During the rapid-fire segment, she was asked to name India’s then-president. Alia mistakenly answered Prithviraj Chauhan, while Pranab Mukherjee was the president at the time.

The mistake quickly went viral, leading to countless memes about her general knowledge. Alia later embraced the joke herself and even appeared in a satirical video titled Genius of the Year.

Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra’s Accent Exchange

Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were once at the centre of rumours about professional rivalry. During the third season, Kareena appeared with Saif Ali Khan and questioned Priyanka about where she had acquired her accent.

When Priyanka later appeared on the show with Shahid Kapoor, she responded with a sharp comeback. She said that she had got her accent from the same place Saif Ali Khan had got his.

Their exchange became one of the show's memorable celebrity moments.

Ranveer Singh’s Controversial Comment About Anushka Sharma

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma appeared together on Koffee With Karan after the success of Band Baaja Baaraat. During the episode, Ranveer made a sexually suggestive comment directed at Anushka that some viewers found inappropriate.

Anushka stopped him and asked him not to speak to her in that manner. The old clip resurfaced on social media years later, bringing the incident back into public discussion.

Salman Khan Says, ‘I’m Still a Virgin’

Salman Khan made his first appearance on Karan Johar’s couch during the opening episode of the fourth season in 2013. Given the long-running public curiosity about why he had not married, Karan asked him about his personal life.

Salman responded by saying that he was still a virgin.

The statement immediately became a major talking point in the Indian media and on social media, generating speculation and memes about his personal life.

These controversies demonstrate how Koffee With Karan has often gone beyond being a celebrity chat show. Over the years, seemingly casual conversations on the programme have sparked wider discussions about relationships, nepotism, gender, celebrity culture and the boundaries of entertainment television.
