Former ESPN journalist Britt McHenry has resigned from her position as a press advisor at the U.S. State Department. According to ABC News, she stepped down on Friday (October 23) following a controversial incident that took place during an NBA basketball game in Washington.

What happened at the basketball game?

The game between the Washington Wizards and the Milwaukee Bucks took place on Wednesday at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. ABC News reported that McHenry was seen throwing a drink at an individual in the stands during the match.

The report notes that footage obtained by TMZ shows her leaving the seating area accompanied by security personnel following the incident. However, the ABC News report does not provide specific details regarding what transpired immediately before the incident.

A Short Stint at the State Department

McHenry had been appointed as a press advisor for the U.S. State Department just last month. Her tenure, however, came to an end only days after the incident at the basketball game.

ABC News reported that a State Department official declined to comment on McHenry’s resignation, characterizing it as an internal personnel matter. At the time of publication, the news outlet had been unable to reach McHenry for comment.

Previous Controversies

This is not the first time the former ESPN reporter has been embroiled in controversy. In 2015, she was suspended by ESPN for one week after a video surfaced showing her mistreating an employee at a towing company.

Now, news has emerged of her departure from her government role in the wake of the basketball game incident. The State Department has not provided an official explanation for her resignation.
