Rahul Dravid Explains What Made Jacques Kallis Different

Cricket has produced many great all-rounders, but Jacques Kallis belonged to a completely different category. Unlike many legendary all-rounders who batted lower down the order, Kallis spent most of his career batting in the top order for South Africa. For years, he was one of the country's leading batsmen while also contributing as a highly effective fast bowler.

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has offered a detailed insight into what made Kallis so special. In Dravid's view, Kallis combined elite batting, quality fast bowling, outstanding fielding and remarkable mental strength in a way very few cricketers ever have.

A Top-Order Batsman Who Could Also Bowl

South Africa's depth in fast bowling meant Kallis did not always need to bowl long spells. Even when his Test workload fell to around 20 overs per match, however, he was far from an ordinary bowler.

He possessed the full range of skills associated with a successful fast bowler—swing, seam movement, control and a dangerous bouncer. He could also increase his pace when his team urgently needed a wicket.

Dravid believes that if Kallis had not carried such a heavy batting responsibility, he might have finished his career being regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time as well.

A Quiet Personality With a Fierce Competitive Edge

Kallis was generally quiet on the field and reserved away from it. But Dravid got to know him better when they played together for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the early years of the IPL.

Inside the dressing room, Dravid discovered that Kallis was actually friendly and open-minded. He simply preferred to keep to himself.

Kallis also had a clear understanding of how to prepare for competition. His training habits showed that he set demanding standards for himself and worked consistently towards achieving them.

Behind his calm exterior was an extremely competitive cricketer.

The Ability to Change the Tempo of a Game

By then, Kallis had already established himself in Test and ODI cricket. His early IPL performances, however, were not as strong as expected.

He understood the growing importance of T20 cricket and adapted himself, even at an advanced stage of his career, to become an effective player in the format.

Dravid particularly admired Kallis's ability to change the tempo of his game according to the situation.

On difficult pitches, he could bat defensively and absorb pressure. When his team needed control of the match, he could immediately shift gears and put the bowlers under pressure.

Dravid recalled Kallis's performances against India in Cape Town in 2011 as a perfect example. On a difficult surface, Kallis used innovative strokes, including the reverse sweep against Harbhajan Singh, and scored two centuries. According to Dravid, India had travelled to Cape Town twice hoping to secure a series victory, and Kallis played a major role in preventing that from happening.

18 Years of Excellence

Kallis enjoyed an international career spanning around 18 years, with 13 of those years coming in the 21st century.

Maintaining a world-class standard across batting, bowling and fielding for such a long period was perhaps his greatest achievement.

Fielding in the slips requires intense concentration on every delivery. Alongside that, Kallis had to bowl as a fast bowler and carry the responsibility of batting in the top order.

Such a workload required extraordinary mental and physical strength. Dravid also believes that Kallis's deep love for cricket was a major factor behind his remarkable longevity.

Natural Fitness and Skill-Focused Training

Dravid explained that he had to work extremely hard to maintain his fitness and relied on recovery routines such as ice baths after matches.

Kallis, by comparison, appeared to possess exceptional physical fitness almost naturally.

That did not mean he neglected training. Kallis told Dravid that he had done extensive gym and fitness work from a young age and received considerable encouragement from his father.

As he developed, his training became increasingly skill-focused. He regularly worked on batting, bowling and catching during practice sessions.

Why Was Kallis So Difficult to Dismiss?

According to Dravid, Kallis was an extremely intelligent and technically accomplished batsman who could handle every type of bowling and bat for long periods.

There was no obvious weakness in his game and no single tactical plan that could reliably contain him.

Early in an innings, bowlers had to target the off stump and try to make him miss full-length deliveries. Once Kallis settled in, however, dismissing him became extremely difficult.

He rarely made mistakes. To get him out, bowlers had to produce genuinely high-quality deliveries, which demanded a significant physical and mental effort.

Dravid compared facing Kallis to playing against an elite tennis player. When Kallis was batting, opponents had to deliver a huge number of quality balls; when he was bowling, they had to deal with exceptional shots.

A Cricketer Who Could Excel at Everything

Dravid was not surprised when a jury panel made up of cricketers selected Jacques Kallis as the Cricketer of the Century.

The scale of Kallis's achievements at the highest level is something fellow cricketers are perhaps best placed to understand.

Dravid and Kallis had remarkably similar batting careers. Kallis played two more Tests than Dravid and finished with just one more run. Both primarily batted in the top order and fielded in the slips, with Dravid taking 10 more catches.

But Kallis had another dimension that made him unique.

Alongside his batting and fielding responsibilities, he was also a genuine fast bowler. He finished his Test career with 292 wickets.

That combination is what truly separated him from most other greats. Kallis was not merely an elite batsman who could bowl occasionally. He was a player capable of performing at the highest level in batting, bowling and fielding while maintaining extraordinary consistency and mental resilience.

For Dravid, that is what made Jacques Kallis one of the most complete cricketers the game has ever produced.
