Ireland Press Conference Ends Early After Heated Exchange With Israeli Journalists
Tensions between Ireland and Israel resurfaced ahead of their UEFA Nations League return-leg clash after Ireland’s pre-match press conference in Bačka Topola, Serbia, was cut short following a heated exchange involving Israeli journalists.
Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson was initially asked by an Israeli journalist about a recent Flydubai-related incident. As the question moved beyond football, a media officer from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) intervened and said: “Today we are focusing only on football-related questions.”
The situation escalated shortly afterwards when another Israeli journalist alleged that Irish players had referred to Israeli footballers as “monkeys” during their previous meeting.
The exchange between the journalists and the Irish side became increasingly heated, forcing officials to end the press conference early. Hallgrímsson was later taken to another location, where he was allowed to speak with Irish journalists.
Tensions Were Already High at the Previous Match
The previous meeting between Ireland and Israel was also marked by controversy away from the football itself.
Irish players wore black armbands in protest against Israel’s military actions in Gaza, while some players lowered their heads during the Israeli national anthem.
There was also controversy before kick-off after Ireland’s captain did not shake hands with his Israeli counterpart.
The FAI is reviewing video footage following allegations that Ireland forward Adam Idah was subjected to racist abuse by Israeli supporters during the match.
UEFA, however, has not opened an investigation into the incident. Reports indicate that the required complaint was not formally filed through the relevant protocol during the match.
With tensions rising again before the return fixture, attention now turns to the pitch as Ireland and Israel prepare to meet in Bačka Topola.
