What Bangladesh Need to Do to Reach the Tri-Nation Series Final

Bangladesh must do more than beat Afghanistan in their final group-stage match to reach the final of the tri-nation series. They also need to finish ahead of Zimbabwe on net run rate.

Afghanistan strengthened their position in the race for the final after defeating Zimbabwe by 158 runs in Abu Dhabi. While the result improved Afghanistan's chances, Zimbabwe's heavy defeat also made Bangladesh's qualification equation slightly easier.

Had Zimbabwe won the match, Bangladesh could have secured a place in the final simply by beating Afghanistan in their last group-stage game. Instead, Zimbabwe's heavy loss means Bangladesh now need to combine a victory with the required net-run-rate improvement.

What if Bangladesh Bat First?

If Bangladesh bat first against Afghanistan, they need to win by at least 41 runs.

Regardless of the total Bangladesh post, Afghanistan must be beaten by a minimum margin of 41 runs for Bangladesh to move ahead of Zimbabwe on net run rate and qualify for the final.

What if Bangladesh Chase?

If Afghanistan bat first, Bangladesh's qualification will depend on how quickly they chase the target.

For example, if Afghanistan set Bangladesh a target of 301 runs, Bangladesh must complete the chase within 42.2 overs to move ahead of Zimbabwe on net run rate.

If the target is 251, Bangladesh need to win within 41.3 overs. If Afghanistan set a target of 101, Bangladesh must finish the chase within 37.2 overs.

Therefore, winning alone will not be enough for Bangladesh. They must either win by the required margin when batting first or chase the target quickly enough when batting second.

If Bangladesh fail to overtake Zimbabwe on net run rate, they will be eliminated and Zimbabwe will advance to the final.

Current Net Run Rate Scenario

Afghanistan are currently at the top of the table with one win from one match and a net run rate of 3.160. Zimbabwe are second with one win and one defeat from two matches, while their net run rate stands at 0.590.

Bangladesh are third after losing their only match so far, with a net run rate of -1.980.

The equation for Bangladesh is therefore straightforward: they must beat Afghanistan and finish above Zimbabwe on net run rate.

Afghanistan have also not officially secured their place in the final yet. Even if they lose their final group-stage match against Bangladesh, their strong net run rate could keep them in contention. However, a heavy defeat could dramatically change the qualification equation.

With everything at stake, Bangladesh's final group-stage match against Afghanistan has effectively become a must-win contest. To reach the final, Bangladesh need both a victory and the right net-run-rate outcome.
