Spanish football is mourning the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, who died at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury during a second-division match against FC Andorra.

Tenerife confirmed that De Miguel died at 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday after being taken to hospital following the incident.

The tragedy occurred late in Monday’s match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, with the score level at 2–2.

In the seventh minute of stoppage time, De Miguel raced forward to reach a long ball. At the same time, Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came far out of his penalty area to clear the ball.

The two players collided, with Owono’s knee striking De Miguel in the head and chest. The Tenerife striker immediately collapsed on the pitch.

Medical staff rushed onto the field and treated him for more than five minutes before he was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The match was subsequently abandoned, while Owono was shown a straight red card.

Condition deteriorated in hospital

De Miguel was admitted to the intensive care unit in serious condition. Tenerife initially described his condition as stable despite the severity of the injury.

However, his condition deteriorated during the early hours of Tuesday. The club later confirmed that he died at 8:00 a.m. local time. Spanish reports said he suffered a cardiac arrest after the incident and was resuscitated before being taken to hospital.

Spanish football in mourning

Tenerife released a statement expressing profound grief and standing alongside De Miguel’s family, loved ones and supporters.

His family has thanked everyone for their messages of support and asked for privacy during this extremely difficult period.

Tributes have poured in from across Spanish football, with clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid expressing their condolences. The Spanish Football Federation also postponed Tuesday’s scheduled matches as a mark of respect.

Born in Madrid in 1996, De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón in 2025. He scored 11 goals for the club last season and played an important role in their campaign.

His life and football career ended tragically at just 30.

Football is usually a game of passion, celebration and competition. But tragedies like this serve as a painful reminder of how quickly everything can change on a football pitch.

Jesús de Miguel will be remembered by Spanish football.
