Bavuma suffered his first defeat in the match against Australia at Renmark.
Across both innings, not a single Australian batsman managed to score a half-century. In contrast, Renshaw played a magnificent innings of 190 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 82 runs in the second.
Australia ultimately won the Durban match—which could well be described as "Renshaw's match"—by 214 runs. Australia scored 390 runs in the first innings, while South Africa managed 284. In the second innings, South Africa declared at 314 for 6.
Would it be an exaggeration to call this Renshaw's match? The answer is likely no.
Chasing a target of 421 runs, South Africa were bowled out for 206 in the second session of the final day; Markram's lone battle failed to spark a miracle. This marked Temba Bavuma's first Test defeat as South Africa's captain; he had won 11 of his previous 12 Tests, with one draw.
South Africa began the final day at 102 for 4. To win from that position, they would have needed to set a world record, and even a draw required something extraordinary. Aiden Markram offered a glimmer of hope almost single-handedly.
Opening the batting, Markram fought a lone battle. He and Wiaan Mulder had nearly navigated the entire first session without losing a wicket, but South Africa found themselves in trouble after losing two wickets in the final 20 minutes.
Mulder, who faced 110 balls, was caught behind off Hazlewood, ending his 69-run partnership with Markram. Kyle Verreynne fell in the very next over. Following their dismissals, Markram continued the fight for a while alongside Jansen.
However, Jansen was bowled for 35 runs. Midway through the second session, Markram—the ninth batsman to fall—was also caught behind off Mitchell Starc, effectively extinguishing South Africa's hopes. Hazlewood took six wickets for Australia in the second innings.
