Infantino Faces First ‘Red Card’ Protest from Wales

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing pressure after the collapse of the controversial plan to sell World Cup commercial rights. Wales has officially withdrawn its support for his 2027-2031 re-election bid, becoming the first national football association to publicly declare no confidence in him.

The Welsh federation accused Infantino of failing in governance, leadership, decision-making, communication and protecting the core values of football. It said he had not put the interests of the game first.

UEFA has also warned FIFA about possible legal action and requested that no related documents or digital records be destroyed or altered. However, it has not yet confirmed whether formal legal proceedings will be launched.

Infantino announced in April that he intended to seek a fourth term as FIFA president. Until recently, his re-election was widely viewed as a formality. Analysts now believe the growing backlash among FIFA members could make the road to the March Congress in Morocco far more complicated.
