Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital after suffering a head injury during Chelsea's Premier League victory over Everton. Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said the 34-year-old goalkeeper was conscious when he left the pitch and was taken to hospital for precautionary examinations.
The incident occurred in the 67th minute at Hill Dickinson Stadium when Martinez came off his line to deal with an Everton free-kick. As he attempted to punch the ball clear, he collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Both players received treatment on the pitch. While Branthwaite quickly recovered, Martinez required a lengthy period of medical attention.
Chelsea's medical team and paramedics treated Martinez on the field before he was carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. He was replaced in the 75th minute by 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders.
The lengthy stoppage for Martinez's treatment resulted in 11 minutes of added time at the end of the match.
Chelsea nevertheless secured a 2-0 victory away from home against Everton, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Neto expressed his concern for Martinez and wished his teammate a speedy recovery.
"We are very happy. We feel bad for Emi. We wish him a speedy recovery. This win is for him," Neto said.
Alonso later confirmed that Martinez was conscious when he left the pitch, while stressing that the hospital visit was precautionary.
The victory moved Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League table with 13 points from seven matches.
